More than 70 photographs illustrate his life, and a detailed chronology provides historical context. As a young man, Easwaran met Gandhi, and the experience left a lasting impression. Following graduate studies, Easwaran joined the teaching profession and later became head of the department of English at the University of Nagpur. In he came to the US with the Fulbright exchange program and in he founded the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation, which carries on his work with publications and retreats. Easwaran lived what he taught, giving him enduring appeal as a teacher and author of deep insight and warmth.

It means making minor sacrifices of small pleasures at times or saying no, gently but firmly, more often than one wants to. When Gandhi moved to Tolstoy Farm in , it was with a motley group of children whom he immediately took under his fatherly wing. During the thirties a woman came to Sevagram asking Gandhi to get her little boy to stop eating sugar, it was doing him harm. The woman left puzzled but returned a week later.
